Someone gave me an idea the other day, or what they thought was an idea. It seemed plausable at first. An idea that would ensure success and instant recognition. I smiled, “If it were only that easy” I thought. You see a company does not brand itself overnight and their efforts often go unnoticed up until they can find a unique niche or once a company can clearly understand their demographic. I am not saying its impossible because hypothetically, all you need is a group’s attention and a single message.
I think the general public is largely in the dark when it comes to advertising & marketing. The amount of energy and finances it takes to manage a popular brand are highly underestimated. In order for your message to be seen (legally) you must pay for the space in which it sits. We all know that it surrounds us we always read the stats about the unbelievable number of ads we encounter everyday. Advertising has seriously changed the way the world works and furthermore changes what we think everyday. Television ads still remain the most effective and expensive ways to get through to the public. Is there an easy way in through public access board meetings, or through the internet? Sending the message and overall message reception is the hardest piece of the puzzle to fit.
When elaborating on recognition and sending a new symbol out for the world to pick up on (think peace sign, or stop sign) The idea of pushing an independent graphic into the same extreme conditions that logos face today is not the problem. The design must be able to withstand mass duplication, must be copyrighted, and not easily satirized. The problem I think comes when deciding on a distribution platform, which becomes the genius behind the project. Its not what you say, its how you are heard.
